Hello,
E’passato un anno, anzi, per la precisione un anno e tre mesi dal mio arrivo a Londra.
Come chi mi segue e chi mi conosce sa già che il più delle volte la amo, ogni tanto la odio anche, ma di certo non mi è indifferente.
Londra è l’immenso,è il viaggio senza sosta, è eterna scoperta di se stessi e degli altri, è il luogo in cui ci è bello perdersi e divertirsi a trovare nuove strade. Nulla e’ impossibile in questa città, basta non avere paura del nuovo, del diverso, delle sfide.
So, it has been a year now since I decided to move to London, precisely, one year and three months.
As those who have been following me for a while as well as those who know me well can imagine, 99% of the time I love it, sometimes I get to hate it, but for sure it would never be “irrelevant” to me.
There’s something about London, it’s a journey without stopping, it’s a constant self-discovery, it’s a the place where you can loose yourself and find new ways . Nothing and impossible in this city, just do not be afraid of the new, the different, the challenges.
Il mercato del lavoro è tanto dinamico quanto competitivo, se vi trasferite a Londra dovrete avere a che fare con head hunters che se troveranno in voi il potenziale candidato, diventeranno la vostra persecuzione e dovrete essere bravi a vendervi e a posizionarvi bene sul mercato se volete ottenere il massimo.
C’è spazio per molti, è vero, ma non per tutti. Bisogna essere bravi e anche pazienti, flessibili e soprattutto pronti a farsi il cosiddetto “mazzo”.
Vedo e soprattutto “sento “(perchè di solito si lamentano) molti italiani che vengono qui pensando di trovare “la mecca”, ma purtroppo non è cosi’. Ottenere quel che si vuole può non essere semplice (benchè molto possibile).
Gli stipendi e i bonus possono essere molto alti, è vero ma bisogna lavorare molto e dimostrare per ottenerli.
I colloqui per le posizioni “buone” e di conseguenza ben pagate, possono essere tre, anche quattro, e vi verrà chiesto di presentare, di preparare dei “case study” a cui dovrete lavorare per una settimana intera prima di essere pronti .. ecco com’era la scrivania in quei giorni..
The job market is dynamic and extremely competitive, if you move to London you’ll have to deal with loads of head hunters,who, if they see in you their potential candidate, will become almost a “persecution” (in a positive way obviously) and you’ll have to be smart enough to sell and position yourself in the best way in the market if you want to get the most out of it.
There is room for many people, this is true. However, not for everybody. You have to be qualified, flexible, patient and above all,ready to roll up your sleeves, go on stage, and “shine”.
I see and “hear” (because they tend to complain) many Italians who come here expecting to get rich and successful straight away, just because it’s London, but unfortunately it is not “just like that”. Getting what you want may not be easy (very possible though :)).
Salaries and bonuses can be very high,yes this is true, but, once again, you have to work hard and going “extra mile”.
To get high and well paied positions you might go through three,or even four interviews, and you will be asked to work on presentations, assignments, projects to which you have to work perhaps for the entire week to get ready .. see below how my desk an get during those days..
E’ necessario sapere tutto dell’azienda in cui vorrete lavorare: chi sono i competitors, quando è stata fondata, qual’è la vision ecc..e anche se sarete estremamente stressati e stanchi a causa dei mille colloqui (perchè vi troverete a doverne fare due o tre in un giorno correndo da una parte all’altra della città) dovrete mostrare entusiasmo, creatività e carisma davanti al vostro interlocutore.
Ogni zona di londra e’ a se’, se ti stanchi di un quartiere puoi andare a vivere in un altro e vivere esperienze di vita completamente diverse . Ci vogliono quattro vite per vederla tutta secondo me.
Knowing DETAILS about the company where you will want to work is a must, once again, you need to show your genuine interest in what the company does: who are the competitors, when it was founded, what is the vision etc.
On top of that,even if you are (because you will be extremely stressed and tired because of the number of interviews (as you could find yourself having two or three of them even in a day running from one side of the city to another) you will have to show enthusiasm, creativity and charisma to the interviewer.
Every area of London can be totally different, if you get bored or feel that you’ve seen enough of a neighborhood, just move to another and enjoy a completely different life experience. Sometimes I feel like it takes four lifes to see it all.
Il cielo ha un colore diverso quasi ad ogni ora. Le sfumature di grigio si mescolano con i raggi di sole e il tramonto e’ spesso rosa o viola.
Anche a Londra c’è il sole. Ogni tanto. Non spesso; e quando succede è speciale, si colora di quella bellezza che ti rapisce, che ti fa restare a bocca aperta, e in quei momenti pensi: non importa quanto è costosa, caotica, difficile o culturalmente ostile..vale la pena.
Andare a mangiare qualcosa, andare in bicicletta o fare una passeggiata lungo il fiume, ti fa sentire subito in vacanza, col vento che ti scompiglia i capelli ed un’indescrivibile sensazione di libertà.
The sky changes colour almost every hour. The gray shades are mixed with the rays of the sun and at the sunset gets pink or purple.
Even London can be sunny every now and then. Not often though, and when it happens it’s amazing: you will see the city with different eyes, a stunning beauty that paralised the sight, and in those moments you think, no matter how expensive, chaotic, difficult,competitive or culturally ostile it can be, it’s worth the hustle.
With the sunshine, having a coffe somewhere with outdoor tables, riding a bike or just going for a walk along the river, will make you feel on vacation, it’s like being in another place, with the wind blowing on your hair and an incredible feeling of freedom.
Quando vivevo a Milano avevo bisogno di partire ogni weekend per vedere posti nuovi, perchè in città mi annoiavo terribilmente mentre qui è diverso… contrariamente alla mia natura “nomade” non sento il bisogno di partire e nonostante non sia molto che sono qui, sento di aver ancora moltissimo da vedere.
Gli stimoli sono tanti,a volte troppi: mostre,concerti, meet up, workshops,party a tema, musicals etc….. ed è difficile scegliere.
Quasi tutti hanno un sogno qui. Tantissimi fanno lavori umili per periodi più o meno lunghi,imparare la lingua e mettere soldi da parte per essere pronti per il prossimo step in life.
Si corre a Londra. Si corre continuamente e a volte si ha la sensazione di non potersi fermare.
Anche solo una semplice passeggiata non e’ mai banale, mai vuota, guardare quello che succede intorno e’ affascinante : a volte basta solo camminare per trovarsi davanti qualcosa di interessante: un artista di strada, uno festival o un mercatino nuovo a esplorare. Se poi siete appassionati di fotografia lasciamo stare..scorci stupendi da immortalare in ogni dove.
When I used to live in Milan, I needed to leave every single weekend to a new destination because during the city was great within the week but saturdays and sundays used to get quite boring, whether here is completely different. Despite my natural inclination to “nomadism”,I don’t feel the need of constantly leaving, as there is so much going on here, that I just have to taste my mood and go for an option: exhibitions, concerts, meet ups, workshops, theme parties, musicals, operas, festivals, museums,whatever you want and sometimes it can be even hard to choose.
Almost everyone has a dream here. Many people have to compromise in the short/medium term and sometimes go for “low profile” jobs for a while, even just to learn the Language better,put some money aside and get ready for the next step in life.
London runs fast, very fast and continuously, and sometimes you have the feeling that you can’t stop otherwise you are going to loose something.
Even a simple walk has a meaning, it’s never dull, and watching at what is happening around it’s fascinating: a street artist,a festival or a new market to explore. If you are passionate about photography then you will find your world..wonderful angles to explore and capture; so many people talking in different languages and at the same time still keeping something from their country of origin (perhaps the way they dress or behave).
A Londra è bello passare del tempo da soli: se vi troverete a leggere, a sorseggiare un tè, a scrivere in qualche caffetteria non mainstream (cioè non Starbucks o Costa, vi troverete di sicuro a parlare con qualche cameriere o “vicino di tavolo” che vi chiederà di dove siete, cosa fate e magari scoprirete cose interessanti anche solo nel fare due chiacchiere con lui, che vi racconterà del suo paese, e del motivo per cui ha deciso di trasferirsi.
Scoprirete quanto sia interessante anche solo parlare con le persone: chi viene qui ha sempre una storia da raccontare, e soprattutto, chiunque decide di venire a vivere qui, lo fa perchè vuole di più, perchè non si accontenta di quello che il proprio paese può offrire.
In London you’ll enjoy spending some time on your own: read your book, write your post or your business plan in a coffee shop while looking at the people passing by as it is so fascinating, plus, I am sure you’ll end up not being alone anymore: a waiter or,the person seated on the table next to you, will start a conversation , asking where are you from, what do you do, why you’ve decided to move to London .
You will discover how interesting it is to even just a brief chat: those who come here have always a story to tell, and usually they do it because they want more, and are not satisfied with what their own country has to offer.
Se vai a est ti sembra di essere ad Amsterdam, la percentuale di hipster con tanto di bicicletta sale vertiginosamente. Shoreditch e’ un po’ il cuore creativo di londra. Il west end al contrario e’ snob, borghese, elegante. In centro Le luci della notte sono come quelle di New York, accecanti, eccessive, ma che ti fanno sentire vivo. Come dico sempre, è un po’ “le citta’ nella citta’” con molto di creato, altrettanto di prestato, o spesso di rubato.
La notte è “busy” tanto quanto il giorno: vedrete persone per strada a tutte le ore, e le scene più assurde, quando non esiste alcuna linea di confine tra ubriachezza e pura follia.
In Italia a 30 anni sei considerato vecchio per studiare ancora ma allo stesso tempo troppo giovane per avere una posizione di rilievo in azienda.
Qui invece in entrambi i casi è l’esatto contrario. Tanti studiano tardi, cambiano carriera tardi, prendono un anno sabbatico per fare tutt’altro o anche solo per fare un viaggio lungo o perchè no, anche il giro del mondo.
A Londra mediamente non si mangia benissimo, forse è vero ma il bello è avere la possibilità di provare qualcosa di diverso: messicano, thailandese, vietnamita, italiano, giapponese, spagnolo..qualunque tipo di cucina avrete voglia di provare, potrete farlo e alla fine, anche se la cucina italiana è la migliore del mondo, secondo me dobbiamo tutti smetterla di volere SOLO ed ESCLUSIVAMENTE quella . La pasta e la pizza sono buone, lo sappiamo, siamo cresciuti con quello, ma come anche tutto il resto “in life” , dico, diamoci l’opportunità di provare qualcosa di diverso, apriamoci a nuovi “sapori”, ad esplorare nuove tradizioni anche attraverso il cibo.

If you go to east london, you will feel like at Amsterdam, and the number of hipsters with their bikes will increase dramatically. Shoreditch is the “creative heart” of London, the little UK Silicon Valley. The west is the the opposite instead: ‘snobbish, bourgeois and elegant.
The lights of the night are bright, blinding, excessive, and make you feel “alive”, as a friday night in the heart of Manhattan.
London is “the cities in ONE city” with many things created, some borrowed and some others stolen
The night is “busy” as the day is and you will see people in the street at all times, sometimes even assisting to some absurd (in a funny way) scenes, where the line between drunkenness and madness can be easily crossed 🙂
In Italy at 30 years old you are considered too old to still study and too young to have a high position in a company.
Here is exactly the opposite : many people start studying, change career late or take a sabbatical year to go for a long trip around the world.
Food wise, the fact that the quality of the food might not be the best, it’s definitely true but the good thing about London is that you can always eat something different: Mexican, Thai, Vietnamese, Italian, Japanese, Spanish..any type of cuisine will be available for you.
The way I see it is : ok, Italian food is the best in the world, we all know that, but (again talking to my connational), we should kind of stop wanting ONLY that. Pasta and Pizza are good, we grew up with that, but like everything else “in life,” I would say: let’s try something different no? Let’s try new “flavors” and explore different cultures and traditions through food as well.
